A'ingae reduplication is phonologically optimizing

چکیده

In this paper, I describe and analyze reduplication in A’ingae (ISO 639-3: con), an understudied endangered Amazonian isolate. The reduplicant is a suffix -ʔσ, where ʔ fixed segment σ syllable copied from the right edge of word. Only disyllabic roots can be reduplicated, root parsed as trochaic foot surface form. If second diphthong, it undergoes monophthongization base. model these properties with reduplicant-specific cophonology (e.g. Orgun, 1996), which consists ranking constraints motivated elsewhere language’s grammar. Thus, demonstrate that phonologically optimizing. All data were collected by author.

What is Reduplication? Typology and Analysis Part 1/2: The Typology of Reduplication

Reduplication has played a central role in the development of phonological theories for 30years. The introduction of Classical Optimality Theory (OT) in the 1990s sparked intensive research into the typology and analysis of reduplicative patterns, as reduplication was a key testing area both for OT and for theories critical of OT. Now, after some 20years of research within the OT model, it is a...

Discontiguous Reduplication

McCarthy& Prince () outline a theory of reduplication in which segments in the reduplicant stand in correspondence with segments in the base. Discontiguous partial reduplication patterns, in which a string of segments in the reduplicant corresponds with a discontiguous string of segments in the base, have been observed in various languages in the Austronesian and Austroasiatic language fami...

Bounded copying is subsequential: Implications for metathesis and reduplication

This paper first defines the conditions under which copying and deletion processes are subsequential: specifically this is the case when the process is bounded in the right ways. Then, if we analyze metathesis as the composition of copying and deletion, it can be shown that the set of attested metathesis patterns fall into the subsequential or reverse subsequential classes. The implications of ...

A-templatic Reduplication

In this squib I discuss an unusual type of reduplication in which the reduplicant varies not only in terms of its phonemic composition but also in terms of its prosodic shape. The variability in the shape of the reduplicant results from a grammar that does not impose any constraint particular to the shape of the reduplicant per se. Further, I demonstrate that even in cases where the reduplicant...
